It is his third Teacher’s Day in Korea for Lucas Foster from the United States.

　When he first started teaching here, most Korean students were hesitant to talk to him who came from far away.

　However, now it is easy to hear an excited mixture of Korean and English in this classroom at Kyunghee Elementary School.

　Smiling and actively engaging the class, the 26-year-old gets good reviews from his most important critics. 　

　Lee Joo-eun, 2nd grader 　Because it’s Teacher’s Day, I wrote the letter for him.”

Kim Woo-jin, 2nd grader 　“The class is fun. He is very nice to us like friend.”

　So what is the secret to such positive responses from young students?

　 Lucas Foster / English teacher 　“ ‘No speaking in Korean.’ I think that’s terrible. I think it’s important to teach them that ’yes, it’s important to learn English but also to be proud of who you are.’”

　Lee Kyung-hoon / English teacher 　“Because (English) teachers also guide students in their daily lives, children also can learn cultural things such as manners.

　　As much as Korean students feel special about foreign teachers here, teaching Korean students is considered an attractive job in the international community.

　The co-author of the popular blog “Eat Your Kimchi” shares his special moments teaching Korean students in a video that went viral last year with over 150,000 hits and over 900 comments.

　Depicting a relationship between students and teachers, that seems more like students and friends, the video has gotten much positive appraisal from both the expat and Korean community.

　 Lucas Foster / English teacher 　"They are really eager to learn. They are respectful but at the same time they are not too serious. It makes the whole experience really enjoyable."

　　 　Many Koreans may have forgotten the true meaning of Teacher’s Day. However, foreign teachers from overseas are rediscovering its wonders.

　　미국에서 온 루카스포스터 선생님은 올해 한국에서 세번째 스승의 날을 맞습니다.

　처음 수업을 시작했을 때만 해도 외국인 울렁증을 보였던 학생들이지만,

　삼촌같이 다가서며 친근하게 다가서는 외국인 선생님에게 이제는 학생들이 먼저 장난을 걸어올 정돕니다.

　이주은/2학년 　"스승의 날이라서 루카스 선생님 주고 싶어서 편지 썼어요.”

　김우진/2학년 “수업 재밌구요. 친구처럼 친절하게 대해주세요.”

　이처럼 어린 학생들에게 외국인 선생님이 인기를 끌 수 있는 비결은 무엇일까.

루카스포스터/영어교사 　"한국어는 절대 안돼 이런 식은 안된다고 생각합니다. 학생들에게 영어 공부도 중요하지만 본인의 뿌리를 아는 것 역시 중요하다는 것을 가르치려고 해요."

　이경훈/영어교사 　"선생님들이 생활지도도 같이 하시기 때문에 일상적인 생활 문화, 용어라던가 매너도 아이들이 함께 배울 수 있고”

　　학생들이 외국인 선생님들을 특별하게 느끼는 만큼 외국인들 사이에서도 한국에서의 영어교사직은 매력적인 자립니다.

　최근 해외 동영상 사이트 유튜브에서는 한국에서 교사로 활동하는 미국인 블로거가 "Why I love teaching"이라는 동영상을 올려 화제를 낳기도 했습니다.

　지난 일년 동안 조회수 15만건, 900여개의 댓글이 달린 이 동영상에서 외국인들은 한국, 그리고 한국 학생들만의 독특한 ’사제의 ’정’을 느낄 수 있다고 합니다.

　루카스포스터/영어교사 　"한국 아이들 선생님 존경하는 마음 크고 순수합니다. 그런 면들이 한국에서 교사라는 직업을 즐겁게 합니다."

　언젠가부터 촌지에 대한 우려로 많은 학교들은 스승의 날을 휴교일로 지정하고 있습니다. 　어쩌면 파란눈의 선생님들이 한국의 새로운 스승의 날 문화를 이미 제시 하고 있는지도 모릅니다.
