Seoul Gangseo-gu District Mayor Jin Kyo-hoon joined residents Friday to cheer on the South Korean national football team.

According to the district office, Jin watched South Korea face the Czech Republic in their Group A opener at the 2026 North America World Cup at the seventh-floor auditorium of the Gomdallae Culture and Welfare Center that morning. Dressed in the red national team jersey associated with the "Red Devils" supporters' group and wearing a Taegukgi headband, Jin led the crowd in chants of "Daehan Minguk, fighting!"

The auditorium filled with cheers and chants as fans rallied behind the national side. The crowd roared "Dae~han Min~guk" throughout the match, and the hall erupted when South Korea scored a comeback goal in the second half.

"I am so proud of our players for showing such fighting spirit and never giving up," Jin said. "I hope the passion and voices of our residents reach the players and spur them on to victory."

The district is organizing group viewing events for the remainder of South Korea's group-stage matches to support the team's push into the round of 32 and to share the excitement with residents.

A group screening of the Mexico match is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, June 19, at the Gomdallae Culture and Welfare Center and Banghwa 2-dong Community Center, while the South Africa match on June 25 will be shown at the same time at Gyeomjae Jeong Seon Art Museum and Banghwa 2-dong Community Center. The district plans to broadcast each match live on a large screen and distribute cheering sticks, headbands and bottled water to attendees.
