Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Hong Ji-seon presented appointment letters to Korea National Railway Chairman Jung Jin-hyuk and Korea Airports Corporation President Kim Won-jun on Friday.
Addressing Jung, Hong said the role and responsibility of Korea National Railway had grown more important at a time when railways are being newly emphasized as a driver of balanced national development and regional growth. Hong called on Jung to develop strategies that go beyond railway construction to strengthen the global competitiveness of Korean rail and create future value.
Hong also stressed that public safety must take priority over efficiency across all areas of rail operations, and that a prevention-focused safety management system must be established to eliminate accidents at the source.
Jung, who had been serving as a professor at Yonsei University, was nominated for the chairmanship on Aug. 20 and officially took office Sept. 1.
Turning to Kim, Hong said the corporation's responsibilities had grown significantly across airport operations and aviation infrastructure management, and urged Kim to pursue management efficiency, strengthen financial soundness, revitalize regional airports and communicate actively with relevant agencies to address local issues.
Kim retired from the police after serving as commissioner of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency in 2021 and took office Sept. 2.
