Sanitary waste treatment expected to curb water pollution and improve public health

Corporation plans to expand sustainable environmental model to Asia and Latin America

Korea Environment Corporation, an agency under the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy, said it held a completion ceremony Thursday (local time) for the Uganda Fecal Sludge Recycling Facility Installation Project in the Busukuma area of Uganda.

The project is an Official Development Assistance initiative aimed at establishing a sanitary fecal sludge treatment system in Uganda to prevent water pollution and improve public health and hygiene conditions for local residents.

Drawing on its accumulated expertise in water quality management and waste treatment technology, the corporation oversaw the entire project — from planning and technical support to facility construction — and led the facility to completion.

Once fully operational, the facility is expected to treat fecal sludge generated in Uganda in a sanitary manner, reducing contamination of nearby rivers and groundwater, preventing waterborne infectious diseases and significantly improving the living environment for local residents.

Cha Gwang-myeong, the corporation's executive director of management planning, said the completion of the facility in Busukuma "internationally demonstrates the corporation's expertise and technical capabilities in building basic environmental infrastructure." He added that the corporation would continue expanding its global environmental operations to East Africa, as well as Asia, Latin America and North Africa, "to contribute to sustainable environmental improvement."
