Seo Mi-hwa vows to be 'kindling' for a prosperous Honam region in Democratic Party supreme council race
Rep. Seo Mi-hwa, who has declared her candidacy for the Democratic Party of Korea's supreme council election, said Monday she would serve as "kindling" in building a prosperous Honam region.
"President Lee Jae Myung has brought to life the three mega-projects embodied in the spirit of 'Yak mu Honam, si mu gukga' — 'without Honam, there is no nation,'" she said, adding that the Honam region had become "an irreplaceable community of destiny" with Lee's people's sovereignty government.
Seo stressed that discord between the party, the government and the presidential office must no longer be tolerated. "We must take seriously the stern judgment delivered by the sovereign people in the June 3 local elections and keep ourselves on edge," she said.
Her key campaign pledges include enshrining the May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising in the constitutional preamble, pursuing constitutional reform to allow a president to serve two terms, and supporting the three mega-projects.
Seo hails from Muan in South Jeolla Province and Gwangju. She is visually impaired and previously served as a non-standing member of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, and entered the National Assembly as a proportional representative in the 22nd general election through a civic society recommendation.
