A video showing popular travel YouTuber Winji being subjected to racist treatment during a trip to Australia has sparked widespread outrage online.
The video, titled "Extreme rage incident… Australia trip gone wrong," was posted June 22 to the YouTube channel "Wonji's Day."
The incident began when bedbugs were discovered inside a campervan Winji had rented during her Australian trip, prompting her to visit the rental company to resolve the problem.
Despite the infestation being found in their vehicle, a staff member responded dismissively and suggested the travelers themselves may have brought the bedbugs from somewhere else, shifting the blame onto them.
Winji wrote in on-screen subtitles that while she understood the company had internal procedures to follow, the employee's facial expressions, tone and behavior made her feel increasingly disrespected.
The situation escalated when Winji handed the employee her phone so he could speak with a local coordinator. The employee refused to touch it, saying, "Honestly, I don't want to touch your phone. I have a child. If there's anything on it, I don't want to touch it," and insisted on using speakerphone instead. The video's subtitles described the employee as displaying a look and gestures of apparent disgust.
Winji's travel companion, Captain Ttageor, calmly pushed back, saying, "We have families too. There were no bedbugs or illness before we got here. From our perspective, we got in the car and bedbugs appeared." The employee cut him off, snapping, "I never said illness."
Winji later explained in the comments that pest control inspectors confirmed the following day that bedbugs had in fact been found in the vehicle. She added that the rental company offered a refund on the condition that she sign an agreement not to post reviews or publicize the incident, but she declined because of how unpleasant the entire interaction had been.
Responding to viewers who asked why she had not pushed back more forcefully at the time, she said the company had internal procedures that left little she could do on the spot. She added that she would work to resolve the matter properly to prevent other Korean travelers from experiencing the same treatment.
