A story posted by an office worker whose wife is refusing to help repay their home loan unless the property is registered in both their names has drawn wide attention online — despite the husband having funded the vast majority of the purchase himself.
On Wednesday, a user identifying himself as an employee at a large company, referred to as A, posted on Blind, an anonymous workplace community app, venting his frustration. "My wife says she will only help repay the housing loan if we put the property in joint names," he wrote.
A said his wife had contributed almost nothing when they bought the home. "I covered more than 95 percent of the total cost," he said, adding that his wife had brought only 30 million won ($19,600) into the marriage.
"If the house is in my name alone, she says I should repay the loan by myself," A wrote. "Is it logical to ignore the home purchase entirely and then demand joint ownership just because she wants to help with the loan?"
He went further: "By that logic, if someone contributes nothing to buying a home but promises to help repay the loan in the future, does that automatically entitle them to a 50-50 joint title?"
A also said he had no idea how his wife was spending her income. "She insists only her own logic is correct and refuses to have a real conversation," he said.
Commenters largely sided with A. "It's only fair to divide the ownership stake based on the initial contribution ratio and the share of loan repayments," one user wrote. Another called the demand for a 50-50 split regardless of contribution "unconscionable."
