The South Jeolla-Gwangju Great Transformation Planning Committee, the transition team for South Jeolla-Gwangju Integrated Special City Mayor-elect Min Hyung-bae, held its first meeting Sunday.
Speaking at the session held at the Bitgaram Complex Culture and Sports Center in Naju, South Jeolla Province, Min said the integrated special city "must become a region-led growth model that leads the Lee Jae-myung government's five-hub, three-special-zone national balanced development strategy." He called on committee members to "design the new special city under the principle that all authority and responsibility rest with its citizens."
Committee chair Jeong Eun-seung said he would draw on his experience in the semiconductor industry to help South Jeolla Province and Gwangju "leap forward as a special city with the highest competitiveness in South Korea."
The committee comprises 20 experts across seven subcommittees — six specialized panels covering civic sovereignty, industry and the economy, science and technology, urban space, culture and tourism, and health and welfare, plus an overarching planning committee — and will operate through July 20.
The body is tasked with setting the policy direction for the early phase of the integrated special city and drawing up implementation plans for key campaign pledges. An inauguration ceremony is scheduled for Monday at 10 a.m. at the same venue.
