Seoul's Dobong-gu announced Tuesday it will spend about 85 million won ($56,200) in district funds this year to help 129 day care centers purchase non-GMO foods, a move expected to benefit roughly 3,100 infants and toddlers. Dobong-gu was the first district in South Korea to supply non-GMO food to day care center meals when it launched the program in 2018. The district currently provides non-GMO versions of cooking oil, gochujang, doenjang, soup soy sauce, brewed soy sauce and corn to the centers. This year, the district expanded eligible purchases from a limited set of items — previously restricted to gochujang, doenjang and a few others — to all foods bearing a non-GMO label. Subsidies will be distributed on a sliding scale based on each center's enrolled child count.
