Citizen riding event to mark completion of Jamsil Han River cycling facility
Bicycle maintenance classes and power-generation experience among programs offered
Facility to provide repair, first aid and changing services
Site aims to become a hub for Han River cycling culture
A new cycling hub along the Han River is set to open, offering Seoul residents a place to ride, maintain their bicycles, rest and take part in various activities. The Jamsil Han River cycling facility, developed by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, is expected to serve as a base for promoting everyday sports participation and spreading cycling culture, while also improving convenience for cyclists along the river.
The Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council announced it will hold a citizen riding event and a series of bicycle experience programs at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Jamsil Han River cycling facility to mark the site's completion.
The event is designed to introduce the newly built facility to the public and give residents a chance to experience its features firsthand in connection with actual cycling. Beyond a simple opening, the aim is to encourage ongoing use by letting citizens directly explore the facility's various functions.
The Jamsil Han River cycling facility was built by the Seoul Metropolitan Government to promote cycling along the Han River and improve convenience for residents. The Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council will handle its day-to-day management and operations.
The facility will offer services cyclists need, including bicycle repairs, basic first aid and changing rooms. It will also operate as a space where cyclists can share information and connect with one another, with plans to expand the foundation for everyday sports activities linked to the Han River bike paths.
The centerpiece of the event is a citizen group ride along the cycling facility and surrounding bike paths, with participants taking in the Han River's waterfront scenery. Riders will be able to enjoy the natural setting while experiencing the accessibility and amenities of the new facility.
Registration for the ride is open through Wednesday via the Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council's website. A total of 100 participants will be selected at random from all applicants. Sign-ups opened Friday.
Side programs will also be available for those looking to pick up practical cycling tips or try something new.
A bicycle maintenance class will provide information on keeping a bike safe and road-ready. A bicycle power-generation experience will offer a novel activity designed to help residents feel more at ease with cycling.
The Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council said it intends to operate the facility not merely as a convenience stop but as an open space where citizens can engage with cycling culture in their daily lives and connect with fellow riders.
The completion of the Han River cycling facility is also significant for broadening access to everyday sports and improving the cycling environment for residents. The council expects the site to make it easier for Han River cyclists to access the services they need and to serve as a foundation for expanding citizen participation programs centered on cycling.
Following Jamsil, the council plans to hold a separate cycling promotion event at the Ttukseom Han River cycling facility, which is scheduled to be completed in mid-November. The council aims to raise the profile of both Han River cycling facilities and steadily grow public participation in cycling.
Seoul Metropolitan Sports Council Chairman Kang Tae-sun said he hopes the Han River cycling facilities will become go-to hubs where cyclists can access the services they need and connect with one another. "With the completion of the Jamsil facility, we have put together a range of programs for citizens to experience the joy of cycling firsthand, and we hope to see a lot of interest and participation," Kang said.
