A dedicated cultural and welfare facility aimed at improving the quality of life for workers in Incheon's northwestern industrial districts and nearby residents has begun full operation.
Incheon Metropolitan City held an opening ceremony Wednesday for the Geomdan Workers' Cultural Complex in the Oryu-dong area of Geomdan-gu, marking the start of official operations.
Built at a total project cost of 21.3 billion won ($15.9 million), the complex spans a total floor area of 4,495 square meters across one below-ground floor and five above-ground floors.
The facility was established to improve working conditions in Incheon's northwestern areas, including the Geomdan Industrial Complex, and to expand cultural and recreational infrastructure for local residents.
The building offers a wide range of education, culture and fitness spaces across its floors: the first floor houses a language lab and community lounge; the second floor contains a sewing room, multipurpose auditorium and computer lab; the third floor features a shared kitchen, dance studio and music room; the fourth floor holds an art room, ceramics studio and exhibition space; and the fifth floor provides a reading lounge and meeting rooms.
The center will pilot 19 short-term courses this month before expanding to a full lineup of 42 education and fitness programs, including regular classes, from 2027.
Distinctive offerings include Korean-language classes tailored for foreign workers, courses on using generative AI and job-skills development programs — setting the facility apart from comparable venues.
The center is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Details on facility rentals and program registration are available on the Incheon Facilities Corporation website.
