Jungnang-gu approves the promotion committee for private redevelopment in the Myeongmok transit-oriented area, with plans for a roughly 6,600-square-meter park and open sightlines to create a pleasant residential environment
Jungnang-gu District Mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi is pushing ahead with an ambitious development agenda, driving redevelopment projects, transit-oriented development and neighborhood renewal schemes across the district at a rapid pace.
At the current rate of progress, Jungnang-gu appears to be on course for a sweeping transformation into a new town in the not-too-distant future.
The district approved Monday the formation of a promotion committee for the Myeongmok Transit-Oriented Urban Renewal Private Redevelopment Project, covering the area around 542-7 Myeongmok-dong.
The approval follows a June 2025 revision to the Act on the Maintenance and Improvement of Urban Areas and Dwelling Conditions, which allows a promotion committee to be formed in areas where public notice for a maintenance plan proposal has already been carried out, even before a maintenance zone is officially designated.
The project has been gaining momentum. After the promotion committee's consent forms were verified and numbered in late April, an approval application was submitted in early September. The committee has secured the consent of about 68 percent of landowners and property holders, surpassing the legally required majority threshold.
The project calls for building a residential complex of up to 40 above-ground floors and 2,195 units in the area around 542-7 Myeongmok-dong. The plan involves rezoning the area — currently a mix of second- and third-class general residential zones — to a quasi-residential zone, creating an urban space that integrates housing with everyday amenities.
Within the complex, a roughly 6,600-square-meter park will be positioned near Myeongmok Station and Myeongdong Elementary School, and open sightline corridors linked to the existing street grid are planned to enhance the pedestrian environment and sense of openness.
"The Myeongmok transit-oriented redevelopment project has taken another step forward thanks to the strong interest and participation of residents," Ryu said. "We will spare no administrative support at the district level to ensure the redevelopment project that residents have long hoped for proceeds without a hitch."
