Gwangjin-gu has installed an AI-based hidden-camera detection system at the women's public restroom near the rear gate of Children's Grand Park, providing round-the-clock surveillance to prevent illegal filming and enhance visitor safety.

The district has already equipped all public restrooms in the area with emergency bells and closed-circuit television cameras, and conducts regular inspections for hidden recording devices. No such devices have been found during those checks, but the scheduled nature of the inspections left gaps in coverage during unmonitored hours.

In response, the district introduced the detection system to supplement its existing safety framework and close those gaps. Five detection modules and one remote controller were installed, using a combination of thermal imaging and radio frequency scanning to monitor for signs of hidden recording devices 24 hours a day. When an anomalous signal is detected, an alert is sent to a manager, who can then quickly check the scene and take any necessary action.

The project was led by the Ministry of Interior and Safety, with national and city government subsidies covering part of the cost. The total project budget, including district funds, came to 6.05 million won ($4,530).

The district plans to continue on-site inspections alongside the new system and will periodically verify that the detection equipment is functioning properly, as part of broader efforts to prevent hidden-camera crimes.

Gwangjin-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said illegal filming is directly tied to the everyday safety of residents and visitors, making prevention efforts essential. "We will continue diligent facility inspections and safety management so that everyone can use public restrooms with confidence," Kim said.
