South Chungcheong Province announced Thursday that it was the only metropolitan government to receive the top honor in the 2026 Local Government Performance Management Assessment, an evaluation conducted by the Korea Institute of Evaluation and Audit that comprehensively examines the performance management systems and operational standards of local governments.

With this recognition, the province has earned the top distinction for five consecutive years from 2022 through 2026, marking the first time any local government has achieved such a streak.

This year, the province was highly rated for systematically managing the entire performance cycle — from goal-setting through evaluation and feedback — underpinned by a strategic performance management plan and active participation from its leadership.

Also noted was the province's establishment of an effective performance management framework through expert consulting and performance interviews to set ambitious targets, along with consistent monitoring of progress and direct linkage to operational improvements.

The province said it plans to continue refining performance indicators around key provincial policy priorities and to connect evaluation results to operational improvements in order to strengthen the overall effectiveness of its performance management.

Hwang Chim-hyeon, director general of the province's autonomous administration bureau, said the five consecutive top honors reflect the province's consistent efforts to strengthen its performance management framework and focus organizational capacity on achieving provincial goals. "Going forward, we will systematically manage the entire performance process — from goal-setting to evaluation and feedback — to raise provincial outcomes and deliver changes that residents can feel," Hwang said.
