The Department of Photography and Moving Image at Gyeongil University in Gyeongsan hosted a special lecture by Rut Blees Luxemburg, a world-renowned photographer and professor at the Royal College of Art in London, on Tuesday.

The visit was arranged at the invitation of Kim Shin-wook, a professor in the department.

Luxemburg, originally from Germany, has built her practice around London, using photography to explore urban architecture, public space, light and time, and the sociocultural dimensions of the urban environment. She currently teaches and conducts research in urban aesthetics at the Royal College of Art.

During her visit, Luxemburg met with Gyeongil University President Jeong Hyeon-tae to discuss the direction of photography and art education at both institutions and the potential for international exchange.

The two sides also explored a range of collaborative possibilities grounded in faculty-student exchange, including joint research, creative projects, critique sessions, exhibitions and international workshops.

Luxemburg then visited the department's Ku Bon-chang Residency, where she reviewed individual student works and projects and exchanged views on creative processes, modes of expression and directions for development.

She also toured on-campus Gallery 11 to view current exhibition works, and visited the department's photography and video education facilities and studio spaces.

A two-hour special lecture held in the main building's international conference hall gave Luxemburg the opportunity to introduce her major works and share her creative experiences with students.

She focused particularly on her long-running project documenting London's nocturnal cityscape, which she began in the 1990s, walking students through her process of photographing architecture, public spaces, urban peripheries and sites of transformation.

Meanwhile, Luxemburg is currently presenting a two-person exhibition, "Terrain Vague," alongside Kim at Gallery JJ in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
