Daejeon bakery marks 70th anniversary on opening day of 2026 Daejeon Bread Festival
Sungsimdang, Daejeon's most iconic bakery, gave away cake to 1,000 visitors Saturday on the opening day of the 2026 Daejeon Bread Festival, marking its 70th anniversary.
Starting at 2 p.m., the bakery held a "70th anniversary cake-sharing" event in the courtyard of the Sungsimdang Culture Center in Eunhaeng-dong, Jung-gu. Visitors received slices of cake along with flour grown on Sungsimdang's own farm.
"It is because of the support and love of so many people that Sungsimdang has become a reason to visit Daejeon, has helped revive commerce in the city's old downtown, and has been able to do work that gives courage to those in need," said Lim Young-jin, the bakery's chief executive. "I am grateful to everyone who has shown us such grace over the past 70 years."
Crowds filled the area around Sungsimdang's main branch and the culture center throughout the day, with visitors coming both for the anniversary event and to buy bread on the weekend. Some had arrived before dawn and waited more than seven hours for the event to begin.
