Gyeongil University's Career Plus Center held a distinguished guest lecture Thursday for about 80 students at the university's Building 5 auditorium as part of its 2026 academic year speaker series.
Kim Byung-woo, a senior superintendent who served as the 38th chief of the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency, was invited as the speaker.
Kim graduated from the Korean National Police University (8th class) and has held a range of senior posts, including chief of the Andong, Goyang and Dongjak police stations, director of public safety situation management at the Korean National Police Agency, investigation planning coordinator at the National Investigation Headquarters, personnel planning director at the Korean National Police Agency, and chief of the South Gyeongsang Province Police Agency.
The lecture, titled "Policing in a New Era," was organized to give students aspiring to careers in law enforcement practical information about the field.
Kim discussed shifting crime trends — including cybercrime and voice phishing — and outlined cases in which science-based policing tools such as AI, drones and rapid DNA analyzers have been deployed.
He then introduced changes in the police's role following reforms to the investigation structure, along with recent recruitment trends, offering students guidance on preparing for a career as a police officer.
"In an era where AI grows ever more capable, sincerity and humanity can actually become your greatest strengths," Kim said. "What citizens want is not a robocop powered by AI, but an officer who is a fellow citizen in uniform."
Kim Ho-gwon, director of the Career Plus Center, said the center would continue to expand career and employment programs connecting students with working professionals across various fields.
