Yongsan-gu in Seoul has upgraded the steep pedestrian approaches around the entrance to its comprehensive administrative complex, making them safer and more accessible for all visitors.

The district office said it has completed improvements to the sloped walkway near 150 Noksapyeong-daero at the complex's entrance, applying universal design principles throughout.

The project aimed to improve pedestrian convenience for residents visiting the complex and to create a safer environment for elderly people, people with disabilities, and others who struggle on steep inclines.

Before work began, the district conducted an on-site survey to assess how residents moved through the area, how they used the paths, and what difficulties they encountered. Officials then reviewed relevant slope regulations and improvement case studies to develop a plan suited to the site.

The most significant change was a redesign of the pedestrian flow along the steepest section. The existing ramp was refurbished, and a set of steps was added alongside it so users can choose whichever route suits them best. Handrail guardrails were installed on both the steps and the ramp to improve safety when going up or down.

Lighting was also upgraded to protect pedestrians at night. The entrance area received high-visibility design elements to help walkers easily identify their route, and the surrounding space was tidied to blend naturally with the environment.

Universal design elements were incorporated into the walkway and signage throughout, making the complex more intuitive to navigate for a wide range of visitors.

Residents who used the newly renovated paths responded positively, saying the discomfort they used to feel on the slope had eased considerably and that the addition of steps and handrail guardrails made them feel much safer than before.

Yongsan-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-dae said the project had improved the pedestrian environment so residents could move through the administrative complex more safely and conveniently. "We will continue to push ahead with improvements to the everyday living environment that residents can feel in their daily lives," he said.
