Open to all residents, the used-goods sharing market takes place at Gwangjin Plaza on Oct. 24; seller applications accepted from Oct. 7 through Oct. 15 via the district website or neighborhood community centers
Gwangjin-gu in Seoul will host a community sharing market at Gwangjin Plaza on Oct. 24, giving residents a chance to exchange unwanted items and put resource recycling into practice.
The event, designed to promote reuse of secondhand goods and foster a culture of sharing, has been held consistently since 2015. Last year, 245 residents took part, with 24 seller teams donating a combined 175,300 won ($129) of their proceeds to charity. This year's edition will be expanded with a range of hands-on resource-recycling programs.
At the market, residents can sell or swap secondhand items they bring from home.
Eligible items include fashion accessories such as clothing, shoes and bags; everyday goods including children's products and stationery; cultural items such as books, CDs and artwork; and kitchenware including cookware and tableware. Sales for commercial purposes — including new or surplus stock — are not permitted.
Seller applications will be accepted from Oct. 7 through Oct. 15 through the Gwangjin-gu district website or any nearby neighborhood community center. A total of 30 seller spots will be allocated by electronic lottery. Selected sellers should bring their items, a ground mat, change and price tags.
Sellers may voluntarily donate a portion of their proceeds. Children and elementary, middle and high school students who participate as sellers will receive four hours of community service credit.
In addition to the secondhand goods market, the event will feature a recycling-awareness booth and hands-on resource-recycling experience stations.
Food trucks using reusable containers will also be on site, giving residents a natural, everyday opportunity to practice resource recycling.
"I hope the sharing market gives new value to items that would otherwise go unused, and becomes an opportunity for residents to naturally practice resource reuse and sharing," Gwangjin-gu District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said. "I invite all residents to join us and share in the joy of giving with their neighbors."
