The Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology and the Korean Society for Biotechnology and Bioengineering have joined forces to advance research cooperation and cultivate next-generation talent in cutting-edge biotech fields, including synthetic biology and biofoundry. The initiative aims to identify emerging researchers and build a research ecosystem connecting industry, academia and research institutions amid intensifying global competition for biotech supremacy.

The institute announced Thursday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with the society at the Jeju International Convention Center to promote the development of emerging researchers in biotechnology and to invigorate academic and research exchanges.

Under the MOU, the two organizations will identify and nurture emerging researchers and support their research activities, develop and pursue joint research projects, build an industry-academia-research network linking companies, universities and research institutions, and co-host special programs.

In particular, the two sides will strengthen policy research and standardization cooperation in synthetic biology and biofoundry. They will also expand researcher exchanges through joint domestic and international projects and academic events, and collaborate on publishing journals and other publications as well as disseminating research outcomes.

The organizations will also strengthen ties between the institute's regional branches and the society's local chapters to help revitalize the biotech industry across the country.

"We will strengthen the research competitiveness and cooperative foundation of Korea's biotechnology sector based on the research capabilities and networks of both organizations," said Kwon Seok-yun, president of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. "We will work to produce tangible results in nurturing emerging researchers and advancing joint research cooperation."
