Nami Island in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, is set to become a single-use-cup-free zone.

According to Yonhap, the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy, Chuncheon city and Nammun, the company that manages stores on the island, signed an MOU on Wednesday to replace disposable cups with reusable ones at all eight beverage and ice cream stores on the island starting next year.

Used cups will be collected through return bins installed across the island, including at the ferry dock and main plaza.

Given the large number of foreign tourists who visit, cups will also be produced with return instructions printed in English, Chinese and Vietnamese.

The Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy expects the switch to reusable cups at island stores to cut single-use cup consumption by more than 420,000 cups a year.
