AI-generated data predicting maritime traffic congestion over the next 72 hours is now open to the public. Mariners can use it to check congested waters before departure and plan voyages, while companies can develop services that integrate the congestion data into navigation equipment such as electronic charts and GPS plotters.

The Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority announced Monday that it has released its "maritime traffic congestion" dataset — which uses an AI model to forecast sea traffic congestion levels over the coming 72 hours — as an open API.

The dataset presents congestion ratings by grade for the 72-hour forecast window using an AI prediction model. It comprises an average of about 650,000 structured data records per day and contains no personal information.

This year, the Ministry of Interior and Safety selected the dataset as a maritime-category entry in its "AI and High-Value Public Data TOP100," a project that identifies and prioritizes the release of public data with high utility in the AI era.

KOMSA has provided related data through the Maritime Traffic Congestion Forecast feature of its Maritime Traffic Safety Information System (MTIS) since late 2023. The authority has now broadened access so that anyone can apply for the open API through the public data portal or MTIS and use the data freely.

Mariners can use the service to check congested waters before departure or to plan routes. Private companies can develop services that combine congestion information with navigation devices such as electronic charts, GPS plotters and marine navigation apps. Government agencies and related institutions can also draw on the data for safety management in congested waters and policy development.

"We will continue to expand the release and use of maritime traffic data to support safe and efficient vessel navigation and build maritime safety services that people can feel in their daily lives," KOMSA Chairman An Yeong-cheol said.

KOMSA launched the MTIS website and mobile app in April 2023. That same year, it introduced the country's first passenger ferry traffic information service (PATIS) in partnership with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, and it has since expanded the use of maritime traffic data — most recently by launching a high-precision passenger ferry service with Kakao Map.
