Residents, volunteers and civil servants conduct intensive environmental cleanup of alleyways and side streets from Sept. 16 through Wednesday; cleanup control center and rapid-response teams to operate throughout the holiday
Gangdong-gu in Seoul ran its "neighborhood-tailored Gangdong Clean Day" campaign across all 19 of its dong from Sept. 16 through Wednesday ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
Residents, volunteers and civil servants took part in each neighborhood, focusing their cleanup efforts on spots that are difficult to reach during routine maintenance — including alleyways, side streets, vacant lots and storm drains.
Participants collected long-accumulated waste and illegally dumped rubbish from around residential areas, working together to ensure that both residents and visitors could enjoy the holiday in a clean environment.
District Mayor Lee Su-hee joined about 80 residents in Cheonho 3-dong on Thursday, walking from Cheonho Rodeo Street through Jinhwangdo-ro and nearby residential alleyways to collect discarded waste. She also took time to hear residents' concerns on the scene.
In Sangil 1-dong, the cleanup was paired with disinfection and pest-control work around storm drains, carried out in cooperation with the Gangdong-gu Public Health Center, contributing to both a cleaner living environment and the prevention of infectious disease.
Following the Clean Day campaign, the district will continue managing cleanliness throughout the Chuseok holiday period. The district is reinforcing guidance to help residents easily check household waste collection dates; scheduled collection days during the holiday are Friday and Sunday. Waste may be put out from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. the following morning.
In addition, a cleanup control center will operate and rapid-response cleaning teams will be deployed throughout the holiday to address any issues on the ground. After the holiday ends, the district plans to concentrate personnel and equipment to collect waste generated during the break all at once, helping residents return quickly to their normal routines.
"I am grateful to all residents who joined the Clean Day campaign from early in the morning ahead of Chuseok," District Mayor Lee said. "The voluntary participation and support of residents is what makes our neighborhoods cleaner and more pleasant."
She added that the district would "do its utmost to carefully monitor the cleanup situation throughout the holiday and maintain a clean urban environment, so that both residents and visitors can enjoy a comfortable and pleasant Chuseok."
