Yun emphasizes expanding cultural access and promoting community sports

Yun Sun-hee, a Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker representing Jongno District 1, has been named vice chair of the Seoul Metropolitan Council's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee. In her first term on the 12th Seoul Metropolitan Council, Yun said she is committed to shaping culture, sports and tourism policies that bring meaningful change to citizens' daily lives.
The Seoul Metropolitan Council appointed Yun to the post on Monday.
The Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee reviews the city's policies and budgets in those three areas and monitors major projects carried out by related agencies. The standing committee handles issues directly tied to residents' quality of life and Seoul's urban competitiveness — including expanding public access to cultural activities, promoting community sports, developing tourism content, building out cultural and sports facilities, and attracting visitors from home and abroad.
Culture, sports and tourism policy is considered a core area that both improves residents' quality of life and injects vitality into the city's brand and local economy. Key tasks include creating an environment where all citizens can enjoy cultural and athletic activities close to home, and developing Seoul's historical and cultural assets into world-class tourism content.
Yun plans to conduct field-oriented legislative work to ensure that policies discussed in committee translate into outcomes citizens can actually feel, rather than remaining administrative plans or one-off projects. She intends to gather broad input from residents and frontline workers during the policy development and budget review process, and to scrutinize the effectiveness and sustainability of individual projects.
She will also focus on closing regional gaps in cultural and sports infrastructure and programming. Her aim is to improve access so that everyone can enjoy culture and sports regardless of where they live or their financial circumstances, and to closely examine whether areas with relatively fewer facilities and programs are receiving adequate support.
"I feel a profound sense of responsibility at being entrusted with the vice chairmanship right as I begin my legislative work," Yun said. "I will consistently listen to voices from the field and faithfully reflect them, so that the policies discussed in committee do not remain plans on paper but translate into cultural and athletic activities in citizens' everyday lives."
She added that every Seoul resident should be able to enjoy culture and sports regardless of where they live or their economic circumstances. "I will take a close look at areas that lack easily accessible sports facilities and cultural programs and work out practical support measures," she said.
Yun also plans to take an active role in identifying policies to help Seoul emerge as a world-class cultural and tourism destination. She said she will work to organically connect the city's historical, cultural and tourism assets and expand content that satisfies both residents and visitors from Korea and abroad.
"I will lead policy discussions at the committee level so that Seoul can grow into a global cultural and tourism city," Yun said. "Setting aside partisan lines, I will do my best to deliver results that citizens can feel and to raise Seoul's standing and competitiveness."
Yun also serves on the Seoul Metropolitan Council's Special Committee on Budget and Accounts and its Budget Policy Committee. She previously served as a Nowon-gu district council member in the 9th term and as a senior aide to a National Assembly member.
