AP calls trip 'another example' of president blurring line between official duties and family business interests

President Donald Trump will travel to Ireland next month to attend a golf tournament at one of his own courses.

According to US media reports, Trump is scheduled to visit Ireland on Sept. 12 and 13 to attend the Irish Open at his Doonbeg golf resort in County Clare.

The trip is expected to include meetings with US Embassy staff and business figures, but observers say the visit is weighted more toward personal interests than official duties. The Associated Press described the trip as "another example of the president blurring the line between official visits and his family's business interests."

Trump has attended tournaments at his own courses before. On Aug. 9, he visited the LIV Golf tournament at his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey — an event briefly overshadowed when a commercial aircraft entered restricted airspace and fighter jets were scrambled.

The Cadillac Championship, a PGA Tour event, is scheduled to be held at Trump's golf resort in Doral, Florida, in March 2028.

Trump has also expressed interest in hosting the British Open at his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland, according to reports.

Trump previously criticized former President Barack Obama's love of golf, mocking him for flying on Air Force One to Hawaii to play.

The Ireland trip comes immediately after a Republican Party convention in Dallas, Texas, aimed at rallying the base ahead of the midterm elections. The Republican Party will hold the convention in Dallas on Sept. 9 and 10 — the first time a midterm convention of this kind has been held outside of a presidential election cycle.

Trump is set to attend both days and will deliver a speech on the night of Sept. 10. Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to speak on the night of Sept. 9.
