A serving police officer has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting the wife of an acquaintance while she slept.
The North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency said Tuesday that Sergeant A, attached to the Gyeongju Police Station, has been booked on charges of forced indecent assault and is under investigation.
Sergeant A is accused of groping the acquaintance's wife, identified only as B, at a residence in Gyeongju in the early hours of Sunday.
Investigators found that Sergeant A had invited the couple, who lived in the unit above his, to his home for drinks. After the gathering ended, he allegedly approached B, who had fallen asleep in the bedroom, and committed the assault.
Officers who responded to the report confirmed the victim's account and the surrounding circumstances at the scene, then arrested Sergeant A on the spot.
Police immediately suspended him from duty and are questioning both Sergeant A and the victim to establish the precise circumstances of the alleged assault.
"We plan to take follow-up measures, including disciplinary action, depending on the outcome of the investigation," a police official said.
