The Gangwon Provincial Office of Education drew attention Friday for staging a highly immersive civil defense CPX, highlighted by an emergency backpack packing competition designed to sharpen real-world preparedness.
By running the backpack packing exercise as a competition, participants could compare their packs against those of others, raising overall awareness of what emergency supplies are truly necessary.
Packing an emergency backpack is the first step toward protecting the lives of family members and students in a crisis.
Fifteen teams took part, with participants selecting food, medicine, hygiene products and other emergency essentials alongside family members or colleagues before assembling their backpacks for evaluation on the appropriateness and practicality of their contents. The event aimed to build everyday safety awareness among staff and their families by having them personally prepare and review emergency supplies, and to spread a culture of keeping emergency backpacks ready at schools and in homes. Top-performing teams received commendations from the superintendent.
Kim Myeong-bok, head of the office's safety and welfare division, said the competition was intended to encourage schools and households to prepare emergency backpacks in advance for earthquakes and other crises, and to strengthen individuals' capacity to protect themselves in emergencies. "We will continue to pursue a wide range of hands-on training and education programs to keep students and school staff safe," Kim added.
