Selected in Ministry of Education's 2026 school complex facility competition
Total project cost 48.14 billion won; GH to contribute 24.07 billion won, Hanam City 20 million won
Hanam City announced Friday that its planned school-community complex, Eoulim Campus, has been selected for the Ministry of Education's 2026 second-round school complex facility competition, securing 24.05 billion won ($17.1 million) in state funding for the project in the Gyosan public housing district.
The ministry grant covers roughly half of the total project cost of 48.14 billion won. Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Development Corp. (GH) will contribute 24.07 billion won, with Hanam City providing the remaining 20 million won.
To secure the selection, the city built a cooperative framework with Gyeonggi Province, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, the Gyeonggi Gwangju-Hanam Education Support Office and GH, forming a preliminary consultative body and signing a memorandum of understanding with the partners.
School complex facilities are community infrastructure hubs that combine education, culture, sports and welfare functions on school grounds for shared use by students and local residents.
Eoulim Campus will be built on the site of the tentatively named Gyosan Middle School No. 1 — a relocation and new establishment of Namhan Middle School — within the first residential zone of the Gyosan district. The building will span a total floor area of 8,790 square meters across one below-ground and four above-ground floors. It will house an indoor swimming pool, a multipurpose gymnasium, a youth training facility, a 3D makerspace, after-school care classrooms and a community cultural center, along with an integrated underground parking garage shared with the middle school.
The campus will be designed as an eco-friendly open space connected to an adjacent neighborhood park and shared sports field. Student safety is a top priority, and pedestrian routes for students and general visitors will be kept entirely separate.
Hanam had been the only municipality in the Greater Seoul area without a school complex facility, while demand for education and sports infrastructure has grown sharply with new town development. The selection allows the city to establish a multigenerational education and cultural hub where residents of both the new town and the older city center can come together.
"This selection will be a pivotal turning point in developing Hanam's third-generation new town into a future-oriented city centered on education and culture," Mayor Lee Hyeon-jae said. "We will complete Eoulim Campus as an open community space for all citizens and a leading model for a city where it is great to raise children."
Eoulim Campus is expected to be completed in March 2030, when Gyosan Middle School No. 1 is scheduled to open, following design competitions, permitting and other administrative procedures to be carried out by GH.
