The presidential Committee of Light announced Thursday it will hold a public contest to commemorate the values and historical significance of the "Revolution of Light" — the civic movement that overcame the Dec. 3 emergency martial law declaration and restored constitutional order.

Any South Korean citizen may enter by creating works in one of three categories — short-form video, poster or personal essay — and submitting them online through the contest website from Thursday through Sept. 23, along with a statement of creative intent.

Entries will be accepted in two divisions: a general division open to university students and adults, and a student division for elementary through high school students. A total of 39 works will be selected following review by a panel of experts.

Winners will receive a combined purse of 15 million won ($10,600) and a citation from the committee chair. Selected works will also be featured in a year-end exhibition aimed at spreading the spirit of the Revolution of Light.

Committee Chair Park Mi-kyung urged the public to participate, saying she hopes the contest will serve as "a meaningful opportunity to reflect together on the value of the democracy we have protected — through the memories and voices of each and every citizen — and to pass it on to the next generation."
