Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 6-year-old boy who fell from the 15th floor of an apartment building in Incheon.
According to the Incheon Bupyeong Police Station, the boy's mother called 112 at around 9:04 p.m. Saturday to report that her son had gone missing from their unit on the 15th floor of a 16-story apartment building in Sangok-dong, Bupyeong-gu, Incheon.
Officers who responded searched inside and around the building and found the boy dead in a flower bed at around 9:30 p.m. — about 26 minutes after the initial report.
The boy, his mother and his younger sibling were the only people in the apartment at the time. In her statement to police, the mother said she had gone to sleep with her son but woke to find him gone, and that she searched the entire apartment before calling police.
Police believe the boy likely fell through a veranda window near the kitchen. During the scene examination, investigators found what appeared to be marks indicating he had grabbed a foothold near the window.
Police have requested an autopsy from the National Forensic Service to determine the exact cause of death. The autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
"No signs of criminal conduct have been found so far, but we plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the accident with all possibilities open," a police official said.
