All three major New York stock indexes fell Tuesday as the United States and Iran remained far apart over passage through the Strait of Hormuz, reducing the likelihood the waterway will reopen.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 184.13 points, or 0.34 percent, at 53,791.85.

The S&P 500 finished 24.91 points, or 0.32 percent, lower at 7,728.20. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite edged down 159.91 points, or 0.60 percent, to close at 26,445.45. Wall Street had also edged down on Monday, the previous trading session, as expectations for a Strait of Hormuz reopening continued to fade.
