More than 8 million national team fan tokens were permanently burned in connection with match results during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North and Central America. Spain, the tournament winner, accounted for roughly 80 percent of the total tokens destroyed.

According to the official Fan Token account on X (formerly Twitter), national team fan tokens permanently burned during the World Cup totaled more than 8 million as of Monday (local time).

Fan tokens are digital assets issued by global clubs and national teams in partnership with Chiliz. Holders can participate in team-related voting, fan experiences and various reward programs.

By country, Spain's national team fan token recorded the highest burn volume at 6,383,180. Belgium followed with 869,890, then Argentina with 248,781, Portugal with 207,575, Scotland with 183,542 and South Africa with roughly 170,000.

The burns were carried out under the "Burn to Glory" campaign that Chiliz, a global sports and entertainment blockchain company, ran during the World Cup. Under the campaign, a set number of fan tokens are permanently removed from circulation based on partner national teams' match results.

Spain set the highest burn record of any team by winning the tournament. The World Cup final, held Sunday at MetLife Stadium in the United States, saw Spain face Argentina — both official Chiliz fan token partners.

"We are thrilled that, following our partner clubs in Europe's top leagues, our partner nations have now met in a World Cup final and claimed the title," Chiliz CEO Alexandre Dreyfus said. He added that the company's "Sportfi" model — which directly links real sporting performance to on-chain blockchain value — would offer fans a new way to engage beyond simply watching the game.
