Via Satellite marks 40th anniversary with list of industry pioneers

Arthur C. Clarke, SpaceX's Gwynne Shotwell, Rocket Lab's Peter Beck among honorees

Sung Sang-yup, CEO of Intellian Technologies, has been named to a list of 40 people who shaped the global satellite industry.

Intellian Technologies announced Tuesday that Sung was selected for Via Satellite's "40 People Who Shaped the Satellite Industry" list, published by the satellite trade publication to mark its 40th anniversary.

The list includes science fiction writer and futurist Arthur C. Clarke, who first proposed the concept of satellite communications, as well as Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of SpaceX, and Peter Beck, founder of Rocket Lab, among other pioneers who drove the development of the satellite and space industries.

Via Satellite cited Sung's role in building Intellian Technologies into a global satellite communications antenna company and his leadership in developing technology and expanding the business to address the multi-orbit communications market, connecting low-Earth orbit, medium-Earth orbit and geostationary satellites.

The publication also highlighted Intellian Technologies' work with global satellite operators including Iridium, OneWeb and SES, through which the company expanded from a maritime antenna focus into the land mobility and government and defense markets.

Intellian Technologies won Via Satellite's Satellite Technology of the Year award in 2018 for its v240MT antenna system, which supports three frequency bands. The v240MT is designed to operate across different frequency bands within a single antenna system.

Competition in satellite communications antenna technology is intensifying alongside the expansion of low-Earth orbit satellite networks. Terminal technology capable of maintaining seamless connectivity across multiple orbits and frequency bands is emerging as a key competitive factor in the maritime, aviation and land mobility markets.
