Taylor Swift's wedding bill: flowers alone cost $5m, total may hit $30m

Debate over the cost of pop star Taylor Swift and NFL player Travis Kelce's private wedding continues to grow. The controversy deepened after road closures and a large police deployment around the venue drew scrutiny — and Swift's side paid more than $160,000 in permit fees to New York City alone.

The Associated Press reported Friday that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani disclosed the permit fees at a news conference. "Taylor Swift paid more than $160,000 in permit fees for the event and the city's response to it," Mamdani said, adding that the permits were finalized a few days before the ceremony.

The wedding took place July 3 at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. The ceremony was held without public access, but the scale of the event and the resulting disruptions to the city drew widespread attention.

A rehearsal dinner was held the previous day, and the celebrations reportedly continued into the early hours of the morning after the ceremony. Roads around the venue were closed for nearly three days, and hundreds of police officers were deployed to maintain order.

The central question is who bears the cost of the public resources deployed. Critics argued that the police presence and road closures were excessive for a private celebrity event. At the news conference, reporters pressed Mamdani on whether Swift's team would cover police overtime costs, prompting him to disclose the permit fee figure.

Major American cities have increasingly clashed over who should pay for security and traffic management at large concerts, sporting events and celebrity gatherings. Swift's wedding has followed a similar trajectory, expanding from entertainment news into a debate over city administration and public expenditure.

The permit fees, however, appear to represent only a small fraction of the total cost. Forbes estimated the wedding cost around $20 million. Celebrity outlet Page Six, citing expert opinion, raised the possibility that the total bill reached $30 million.

Esther Lee of wedding company The Knot Worldwide told Page Six that flowers and décor alone would have cost at least $5 million, with the total running between $20 million and $30 million.

The guest list was also cited as a major cost driver. Foreign media reported that more than 1,000 guests attended. Catering, on-site operations and security management alone were estimated to have cost between $2.5 million and $3 million, while attire and entertainment were put at around $2 million.

Wedding planning site Bridebook.com estimated the total at $20 million to $25 million, calling it "almost 1,000 times the average cost of a wedding worldwide."

The event was kept strictly private. No official photos or footage have been released; details have emerged only through accounts from some guests. Yet as the permit fees and the scale of the city disruptions became public, the wedding has drawn attention not only as a marquee celebrity event but also as a flashpoint over extravagant spending.
