Ko Yong-jin, the 38th secretary-general of the National Assembly secretariat, began his tenure Tuesday after receiving his letter of appointment from National Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-sik and delivering an inaugural address at the Assembly's reception room.

The ceremony was attended by Ko along with the legislative and administrative deputy secretaries-general, senior specialist committee members, heads of secretariat departments, and planning and management officials from the National Assembly Library, the National Assembly Budget Office, the National Assembly Research Service and the National Assembly Records Center.

In his address, Ko said the Assembly must be prepared to support lawmakers' legislative and policy work, citing the rapidly changing environment driven by advances in AI and other cutting-edge technologies.

"You have done well with professionalism and dedication up to now," he said. "The Assembly must always be ready when members want to do their work at the right time. Whenever lawmakers want to deliver results, we must be prepared."

Ko also noted that the secretariat operates under the speaker's direction and supervision to handle administrative affairs related to the Assembly's legislative activities. "The secretary-general is not the main actor in politics — the role is to provide support. The same goes for all secretariat staff," he said, pledging to help employees perform to their full potential in an improved working environment.
