A man in his 40s who fell from a commercial building in Incheon was rescued after catching himself on an air conditioning unit mounted on the building's exterior wall.

According to the Incheon Bupyeong Police Station and the Incheon Fire Department, emergency services received a call Sunday at around 10:40 a.m. reporting that a man was hanging from an outdoor AC unit on the fifth floor of a six-story commercial building in Bupyeong-dong, Bupyeong-gu.

Officers and firefighters who responded deployed an air mattress on the ground below and forced open a fifth-floor door to carry out the rescue. About 23 minutes after the call came in, they safely brought down the man, identified as a 47-year-old Myanmar national.

An investigation found that the man had fallen from a Myanmar religious center on the sixth floor and become caught on the AC unit on the fifth-floor exterior wall.

Police said they believe the man has a mental illness, based on statements from people at the scene, and had him admitted for emergency psychiatric care.

He sustained an ankle injury in the fall but is not in a life-threatening condition.

Police and fire authorities are continuing to look into the exact circumstances of the fall and plan to determine the cause based on witness statements and other information.
