Gwangju Environmental Movement Coalition chair and co-president tapped to lead body honoring democracy defenders

President Lee Jae Myung has appointed Park Mi-kyung, chair and co-president of the Gwangju Environmental Movement Coalition, to lead the Committee of Light, a presidential advisory body, Cheong Wa Dae said Friday.

Presidential Chief Spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a written briefing that the Committee of Light was established as a presidential body "to honor the dedication and noble spirit of the citizens who defended South Korea's constitution and democracy against armed soldiers through the Revolution of Light" during the Dec. 3 emergency martial law.

Kang added that Park "is a civic activist who has devoted the past 30 years to the advancement of civil society and democracy, having served as co-chair of the Civil Society Organizations Solidarity Council and national co-chair of the Korean Federation for Environmental Movements." Park was chosen as "the right person to honor the citizens who defended the constitution and democracy through the Revolution of Light against the insurrection, and to spread the standing of K-democracy at home and abroad," Kang said.

Kang said Park "is expected to further elevate the quality of K-democracy that the people have safeguarded, drawing on her deep understanding of civic democracy and her ability to communicate, thereby supporting a government rooted in popular sovereignty."
