Daejeon-Sejong-South Chungcheong climate council discusses climate data use and carbon neutrality strategies, adopts joint action slogan
The Daejeon-Sejong-South Chungcheong Climate Council announced Wednesday that it had successfully concluded the "2026 Chungcheong Regional Climate Crisis Response Joint Forum," held at the Daejeon Regional Meteorological Office and the Haengbok Nurimteo community center in Sodam-dong, Sejong.
Held under the theme "A Changing Climate, a Future the Chungcheong Region Prepares Together," the forum drew about 100 participants — including climate council officials, local government civil servants, public institution representatives, academics and civic organization members — who discussed regional cooperation strategies for addressing the climate crisis and achieving carbon neutrality.
In the first session, four subject-matter experts delivered back-to-back presentations on the severity of the climate crisis and the direction of regional responses.
Topics covered included the development of national climate change standard scenarios providing scientific climate information for carbon neutrality policy; a collaborative case study from Gwangju on regional climate crisis response; strategies for strengthening adaptation infrastructure to protect climate-vulnerable groups and areas; and climate action hub cases and Chungcheong-specific strategies for regional climate crisis response. All presentations drew strong interest from attendees.
A panel discussion followed, moderated by Choi Young-gyun, a professor at Chungnam National University. Nine experts from the Korea Meteorological Administration, the Korea Environment Institute, the Chungnam Research Institute, carbon neutrality support centers and civic organizations exchanged views on applying climate information in policy and expanding carbon neutrality practices at the local level.
Participants agreed that the climate crisis is a shared challenge rather than the concern of any single region or institution, and reached a consensus on the need to share science-based climate information and strengthen inter-regional cooperation frameworks.
The second session featured a carbon neutrality campaign under the theme "Gather Ideas, Change the Future," in which participants used QR codes to suggest keywords for carbon neutrality action.
Attendees shared a range of ideas on carbon neutrality practices and reaffirmed their commitment to collective action. Key keywords generated through on-site participation will be developed into a carbon neutrality campaign slogan for use in future joint promotional activities and efforts to spread a culture of carbon neutrality practice.
The Daejeon-Sejong-South Chungcheong Climate Council, established in 2023, plans to continue expanding cooperation toward carbon neutrality through the sharing of climate science information, support for climate crisis adaptation measures and citizen-participation campaigns across the Chungcheong region.
"This forum was a meaningful occasion connecting scientific information, policy and civic action in response to climate change," a Daejeon city official said. "We hope it will serve as a starting point for the Chungcheong region to work together against the climate crisis and build a sustainable future."
