Two students opened fire at a high school in the Philippines on Monday, killing three fellow students and wounding seven others.

The shooting broke out around 9 a.m. at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, Leyte province, in the central Philippines, when two students — aged 14 and 15 — opened fire with two handguns. Most of the victims were female students.

The pair began shooting inside one classroom, then chased fleeing students into another and continued the attack. Social studies teacher Erwin Noga, 52, told AFP he saw the gunmen approaching and told his students to hide under their desks before locking the door. "The children were crying and terrified," he said.

One suspect was apprehended at the scene immediately, while the other fled to a nearby residential area before police arrested him following a tip from residents. The two, described as close friends, told investigators during initial questioning that they had been bullied at school.

The weapons used were a 9mm pistol and a .38-caliber revolver. Police confirmed the 9mm pistol belonged to a serving police officer, who has since been arrested and is under investigation. How the guns were obtained and brought onto school grounds has not yet been established.

President Ferdinand Marcos ordered authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the safety of schools nationwide. Authorities urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information on social media while the probe is ongoing.

School shootings are rare in the Philippines. In July 2022, three people were killed in a shooting at a graduation rehearsal at Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City, a case ultimately attributed to a personal motive. The Philippines maintains strict regulations on legal gun ownership, but firearms circulate widely due to a large black market.
