Former Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo declared that he has "retired from active politics" and is "no longer a politician," demanding that critics stop targeting him in their commentary.

Hong made the remarks in a Facebook post on June 20, saying he found it "quite laughable" that "half-baked critics are debating someone who isn't even a politician."

"I write freely, like the wind, share my thoughts, run a YouTube channel and occasionally appear on broadcasts," he added.

Hong said he had never wavered during his political career, serving a conservative party for 30 years and always securing his positions through his own efforts — never by belonging to a faction or relying on one for support.

He said his decision to run in the presidential election following the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye was not driven by a desire to win, but by a determination to save a party that had been decimated. He said those who write as if the party had done him a favor by letting him run reflect "the immaturity of inexperienced reporters."

Turning to the current state of the People Power Party, Hong said that Jang Dong-hyeok, the party leader, "makes a lot of moves that draw media hostility and is still rough around the edges, but at least he is holding on with tenacity — and that is why the party is surviving even as it faces accusations of being an insurrection party."

He said it was "deeply regrettable" that a "clan media cartel" was engaging in collective harassment to destabilize even that, in order to promote a particular individual.

Earlier, Hong posted a separate message on Facebook taking aim at the People Power Party, saying its so-called young reformist lawmakers were "acting like immature children, consumed by internal power struggles" instead of uniting against external threats. "Rather than thinking about joining forces to fend off outside dangers, they are fixated on internal fighting — each wanting to be captain of a sinking ship," he said.

Hong also said the party's self-styled young reformists had long made a habit of "shrinking back in fear during battles against the opposition, while using the banner of reform only in intraparty fights to build up their clout." He added: "The fact that they still haven't broken that habit is truly disheartening."
