Police have launched an investigation after two elementary school brothers died at a water play facility that had yet to officially open for the summer.

According to South Jeolla Province police and other authorities, a mother called emergency services at around 2:42 p.m. Sunday reporting that two children had fallen into the water and collapsed at a privately operated water play facility in Gokseong-gun, South Jeolla Province.

Fire department responders rushed to the scene and transported the brothers — a 10-year-old identified as A and his 9-year-old sibling — to a hospital, where both died about two hours after arrival.

The brothers had visited the recreational park with their family for the weekend when the tragedy occurred, according to authorities.

Police said the facility had no other visitors at the time of the accident, as it had not yet opened for the summer season. Preliminary findings indicate the two brothers were the only people inside the water park, with no family members, lifeguards or facility staff present.

Immediately after the accident, police reviewed CCTV footage from inside the facility and obtained initial statements from facility personnel as reference witnesses.

Investigators are paying close attention to the fact that the water where the brothers were playing was very shallow. Police said they are keeping open multiple possible causes of death beyond drowning, including electrocution.

An autopsy is to be requested from the National Forensic Service on Monday to determine the exact cause of death. A joint on-site forensic examination of the entire facility is also planned.
