Isolation incidents and infrastructure damage mounted Saturday across Gangwon Province and the Chungcheong region as heavy rain swept much of the country.
More than 200 millimeters of rain fell on Gangwon's Misiryeong pass, where a heavy rain warning was in effect, forcing authorities to close all trails in Seoraksan National Park and prompting organizers to cancel or modify some events at the Gangneung Danoje festival.
According to the Gangwon Regional Meteorological Administration, heavy rain warnings remained in effect for Sokcho and Yangyang as of 2 p.m. Saturday, while strong wind and wave advisories were also issued along the East Coast. Rain briefly eased, but strong winds and high waves continued.
Cumulative rainfall as of 2 p.m. stood at 207.5 millimeters at Misiryeong, followed by 186.0 mm at Sokcho Daebo, 177.0 mm at Yangyang Myeonokchi, 172.5 mm at Yangyang Hajodae, 169.5 mm at Hyangnobong, 101.4 mm at Donghae, 79.0 mm at Hoengseong and 73.4 mm at Jeongseon.
The Seoraksan National Park office upgraded its heavy rain advisory to a heavy rain warning at 9:30 a.m. and immediately closed all high-altitude trails.
The Gangneung area also recorded heavy rainfall — 169.8 mm in North Gangneung and 170.5 mm in Jumunjin — disrupting parts of the ongoing Gangneung Danoje festival schedule.
The Gangwon Youth Activity Grand Festival D.Y.F and a swing competition scheduled for Saturday were canceled, while a prose writing contest and outdoor sketching event were moved indoors.
The stepping-stone bridge across the Namdaecheon River was partially submerged and damaged by rising waters, forcing a complete closure to pedestrians. Gangneung city also decided to shut down the Wolhwa Street night market, which had been scheduled to operate through the weekend.
The Gangwon Province fire department received reports of three fallen trees and three cases of sewer backflow, among other incidents.
Rain-related damage reports also poured in from Daejeon, Sejong and South Chungcheong Province.
According to the Daejeon-Sejong-South Chungcheong fire department, about 50 damage reports — including fallen trees, traffic accidents and isolation incidents — were received overnight from South Chungcheong Province. No casualties had been reported as of Saturday.
In Dangjin's Godae-myeon, a solo vehicle accident on a slope at around 5:51 a.m. sent the driver to hospital.
In Asan's Sirok-dong, a fisherman was reported stranded in rising waters along the Gokgyocheon stream at around 6:06 a.m. Fire authorities launched a rescue operation, and the fisherman returned home without serious injury.
In Daejeon, 14 storm-related reports were filed in total, including a tree that fell onto a road in Jung-gu's Munhwa-dong at around 3:48 a.m., blocking traffic.
At around 6:23 a.m., a taxi overturned while in service in Dong-gu's Samgoe-dong in Daejeon. Fire authorities rescued the driver and took him to hospital.
The Daejeon Meteorological Administration said most of South Chungcheong Province received 15 to 20 millimeters of rain per hour during the morning.
Cumulative rainfall from Friday through noon Saturday totaled 97.0 mm at Jeongan in Gongju, 85.0 mm at Gyeryong, 81.5 mm at Cheongyang, 73.3 mm at Seosan, 71.3 mm at Daejeon and 69.0 mm at Jeonui in Sejong.
The Korea Meteorological Administration warned that risks of landslides, retaining wall collapses and river flooding remain in areas with weakened ground even after the rain stops. It said continuous precautions are necessary near valleys, streams and steep slopes regardless of further rainfall, as the risk of accidents persists.
