A story about a woman offered an apartment worth 800 million won (about $526,000) by her future in-laws — on the condition she agree to 10 rules, including mandatory attendance at ancestral rites, a ban on nagging her husband and sharing the front-door passcode — has sparked debate online.
The post, titled "10 conditions from in-laws who say they'll provide an 800 million won apartment," appeared recently on Blind, an anonymous online community for office workers.
According to the author, identified only as A, her prospective in-laws offered to provide housing in exchange for her compliance with a list of demands.
The conditions include contacting or visiting the in-laws at least once a week for a shared meal, having children after marriage, attending and helping prepare for four ancestral rites ceremonies a year, and spending two days at the in-laws' home before visiting her own parents during holidays.
She would also be required to memorize the names and faces of all extended family members and take one overseas trip per year with the in-laws' family.
In addition, she must not nag her husband about his spending or financial matters, must not express displeasure if he comes home late from work dinners or other gatherings, and must share the front-door passcode with her parents-in-law.
Should she wish to move or sell the apartment, she would be required to consult her in-laws in advance.
The post drew sharply divided reactions online.
Supporters argued that "if you're receiving 800 million won, you should be willing to accept these terms" and that "the demands aren't even that excessive."
Critics pushed back, with comments such as "sharing the door passcode and no nagging the husband? I'd rather not take it," "800 million won is a lot of money, but if it means giving up your freedom, you have to think hard about it," and "they're trying to control the daughter-in-law too much."
