The transition committee for Pohang Mayor-elect Park Yong-seon has launched full-scale departmental briefings by subcommittee, accelerating the handover of city administration ahead of the ninth civilian-elected term.

The committee launched June 10 and immediately received briefings on key issues by bureau under the mayor-elect's direction. Starting June 11, three subcommittees — covering autonomous administration, the economy and industry, and construction and urban affairs — held briefings with their respective departments.

The briefings went beyond a simple handover of duties or review of current conditions. The committee used the sessions to closely examine the feasibility of campaign pledges for the incoming term, identify problems with major pending issues, and map out directions for improvement.

The autonomous administration subcommittee reviewed fiscal conditions and called for the establishment of a two-way communication system to ensure public input feeds into policy, stronger cooperation on civil complaint handling, expansion of administrative welfare center functions at the township and neighborhood level, and the entrenchment of proactive and courteous administration.

The economy and industry subcommittee said the Hyeongsan River improvement project should take into account the livelihoods of fishing communities, called for securing the practical effectiveness of the Arctic shipping route project, and said there was a need to nurture young farmers and shift toward a sustainable agricultural policy.

The construction and urban affairs subcommittee reviewed delays in the Yeongil Bay Crossing Bridge project and called for securing national government funding and strengthening cooperation with the central government.

The subcommittee also called for the development of a specialized fire response system and safety management measures to prepare for the growing number of secondary battery companies in industrial complexes.

The committee plans to compile the issues and improvement tasks raised during the briefings and incorporate them into a forthcoming comprehensive report and the incoming administration's operational direction.

The committee said it would focus on securing fiscal soundness, delivering administration centered on people's livelihoods, and pushing forward key projects with speed.

Transition committee chair Gong Won-sik said the briefings were "a core procedure for confirming the priorities and improvement tasks of the incoming Pohang city administration." He added: "We will review fiscal matters strictly, bring administration closer to people's daily lives, and move key projects forward with urgency, so that the mayor-elect's governing philosophy translates into policies that reach citizens."
