Indorama Train 3 production facilities brought online ahead of schedule; company eyes follow-on projects and Africa expansion
Daewoo Engineering & Construction announced Friday that it has completed the Indorama Fertilizer Plant Train 3 project in Nigeria.
The project, located near Port Harcourt in Rivers State, involved constructing ammonia production facilities with a daily capacity of 2,300 tons and urea and urea-fertilizer production facilities with a daily capacity of 4,000 tons. The contract was valued at approximately $265 million, excluding VAT, and construction ran for 32 months from October 2023 through May this year.
Nigeria holds Africa's largest natural gas reserves and has been actively developing its fertilizer industry to capitalize on that resource. Daewoo Engineering had previously completed Indorama Fertilizer Plant Trains 1 and 2, as well as a feed conditioning unit for the same client.
Daewoo Engineering finished key milestones ahead of schedule throughout the project. Natural gas feed-in was completed May 5, 14 days earlier than planned. First ammonia production was achieved 16 days early, and first urea production 19 days early. Full-capacity operation of both the ammonia and urea plants was each reached 13 days ahead of schedule, establishing a stable commissioning record.
"The early achievement of major milestones and the successful completion of Indorama Fertilizer Plant Train 3 reflect the project execution experience and local networks we have built up in Nigeria," a company official said. "Building on the trust we have established with our client, we plan to actively pursue follow-on projects and accelerate our expansion across the African market."
Since entering the Nigerian market in 1983, Daewoo Engineering has carried out 75 projects worth approximately $10.8 billion in the country and has expanded its footprint through roughly 290 contracts across 11 African nations. The company has also designated Mozambique as its next hub for liquefied natural gas business development in Africa as it continues to broaden its reach into Africa, Southeast Asia and North America.
