Former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is serving a life sentence after being convicted at trial on insurrection charges, has issued a message from prison citing passages from the Bible.
On Thursday, defense attorney Bae Eui-cheol shared the message on Facebook, writing that he was conveying words spoken during a visit with Yoon.
According to Bae, Yoon said he "prays constantly from prison for this country and its people, particularly the youth," and asked that "two Bible verses be passed on to brothers in faith."
Both passages are from the Old Testament. The first, Habakkuk 2:14, reads: "For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea." The second, Isaiah 40:31, reads: "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."
The message came as election fraud claims resurfaced — driven largely by "Yoon Again" supporters — following a ballot shortage during the June 3 local elections. It contained no expression of remorse.
Yoon has issued a series of prison messages through attorney visits, timed to mark occasions including the first anniversary of his declaration of martial law last December, Christmas, the Lunar New Year and Easter this year.
