Shin Su-jeong, the incoming chief of Gwangju's Buk-gu district, welcomed news that Samsung Electronics plans to build a semiconductor factory in the Cheomdan 3 district, calling it "a meaningful turning point that will redraw the industrial map of Buk-gu and the Jeonnam-Gwangju region."

"This news is a significant signal that the growth axis of advanced industries, long concentrated in the Greater Seoul area, is expanding southward — and that our region, on the eve of launching the Jeonnam-Gwangju integrated special city, is stepping onto a new stage for balanced national development," Shin said.

She added that Cheomdan 3 is "the core space that will drive Buk-gu's future growth." If the Samsung Electronics semiconductor factory project moves forward alongside a scale-up by Amkor Technology Korea, she said, "Buk-gu can leap forward as a new growth hub generating high-value-added future industries and quality jobs."

Shin also described the development as "a precious opportunity to bring forward the vision of Buk-gu as an AI industry hub centered on advanced technology" — a pledge she made during the election campaign. "I will work to make Buk-gu the central city leading the future growth of the Jeonnam-Gwangju integrated special city," she said.

Shin said the news represents "a meaningful achievement in which the Lee Jae-myung administration's philosophy of balanced development is taking concrete shape," adding that "the policy direction of moving beyond a Seoul-centric system and building a region-led growth framework is now advancing into full implementation."
