Meeting follows morning call for general assembly; agenda expected to include scheduling of assembly vote on Jang's future
Newly elected People Power Party floor leader Jeong Jeom-sik is set to meet Thursday with junior lawmakers in the party over the future of PPP leader Jang Dong-hyeok.
Rep. Lee Seong-gwon, secretary of the junior lawmakers' group Alternative and Future, said in a phone interview that the group had arranged to meet with Jeong on Thursday afternoon. The meeting follows a morning request by Alternative and Future members for Jeong to convene a general assembly of PPP lawmakers.
Jeong is expected to discuss with the junior lawmakers whether to hold a general assembly and what to do about Jang's leadership position. He had previously said he would "gather the consensus of lawmakers" — through a general assembly or other means — in response to calls for Jang to step down.
At a press conference Thursday, the group said the PPP "suffered a crushing defeat in the June 3 local elections" and that "Jang Dong-hyeok's leadership has collapsed — this is a matter for the Jang leadership to answer for."
The press conference was attended by Rep. Lee along with Reps. Kwon Young-jin, Park Jeong-ha, Ko Dong-jin, Ahn Sang-hun, Kim Geon, Kim So-hee, Kim Jae-seop and Kim Yong-tae.
