Hana Financial Group and Ministry of National Defense sign MOU

'Hero with Hana' program to support 300 service members and families each year

Hana Financial Group announced Tuesday it will launch the "Hero with Hana" program to boost morale and improve welfare for military service members.

Under the MOU, Hana Financial Group plans to provide approximately 1 billion won (about $647,000) in annual welfare benefits to around 300 service members and their families each year.

The program will first support 200 service members caring for children or parents with disabilities, covering rehabilitation and psychological treatment costs, medical expenses, and the purchase of assistive devices such as wheelchairs.

Another 60 service members — including those killed or injured in the line of duty and those stationed at remote posts — will receive support to improve their children's learning environments, with funding for study furniture such as desks and digital devices including laptops, tablets and desktop computers.

A further 40 service members who sustained physical disabilities from on-duty accidents will receive support covering rehabilitation and psychological treatment costs, the production of custom prosthetics, and the purchase of medical assistive devices such as wheelchairs.

At Monday's signing ceremony, Defense Minister Ahn Kyu-baek expressed deep gratitude for Hana Financial Group's support for the families of service members killed or wounded in defense of the country, as well as those caring for family members with disabilities. "The Ministry of National Defense will also fulfill its responsibilities to the end — honoring the noble sacrifice and dedication of our heroes and ensuring that their extraordinary commitment is met with extraordinary recognition," he said.

Hana Financial Group Chairman Ham Young-joo said it was meaningful to partner with the Defense Ministry in June, the month of national patriotism and veterans' commemoration, to support the morale and welfare of service members and their families. "We will take the lead as a steadfast partner in the lives of service members and their families, fulfilling finance's genuine social responsibility in recognition of their dedication and sacrifice," he said.

Hana Financial Group built the "Hana Hall" on Yeonpyeong Island in 2013 to serve service members, their families and local residents, and has continuously provided scholarships for service members and the children of fallen soldiers through the Marine Corps Deoksan Scholarship Foundation since 2017.

The group also runs mobile financial and economic education sessions and investment consulting for military units, and offers a range of financial products tailored to service members — the Hana Narasarang Card, the Soldier Tomorrow Preparation Savings account, the Lifetime Soldier Savings account, and the Military Lifestyle Stabilization Loan. <style ref="s0">For service members and Hana Narasarang Card holders in particular, the group opened the "Hana Narasarang Card Lounge," a multipurpose rest space at Euljiro 1-ga Station in Seoul.</style>
