A vaccine whose key components were designed from the outset by AI has passed its first human clinical trial.
A research team led by professor Jonathan Heeney of the University of Cambridge published Phase 1 clinical trial results for the vaccine candidate — designed to target the entire coronavirus family — in the latest issue of the Journal of Infection on Friday. The trial enrolled 39 adults between the ages of 18 and 50 and ran from December 2021 to September 2023.
The vaccine was developed by having AI analyze the genetic information of multiple coronaviruses to design a "super antigen" capable of training the immune system. It was engineered to induce a broad protective immune response against the wider coronavirus family, including SARS, COVID-19 and bat-derived coronaviruses.
The research team told the BBC that the goal was to create "a vaccine that protects not just against today's viruses but against what could cause the next outbreak or disease," calling it "a fundamental shift in the way we approach pandemic preparedness."
The trial used a needle-free delivery method, applying the vaccine directly to the skin's surface. No serious adverse events or severe side effects were recorded.
However, the vaccine showed some limitations in terms of actual immune response. The paper described the immune response as "modest," while affirming that the underlying vaccine design concept had been validated.
The research team attributed the muted results to trial participants already having elevated baseline antibody levels — either from prior omicron infections or existing vaccinations acquired in daily life — making it difficult to isolate the AI vaccine's independent effect.
Outside experts were enthusiastic about the findings. Andy Pollard, director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, told the BBC that AI "will be a game changer for vaccine research," adding that it would dramatically accelerate development timelines and save countless lives.
Marian Knight, a professor at the National Institute for Health and Care Research, also called the trial's success "a significant leap toward giving humanity broad and lasting protection against viruses."
Meanwhile, the Cambridge research team is currently conducting animal studies using the same AI platform to develop a universal flu vaccine that would not require annual updates, an H5N1 avian influenza vaccine, and vaccines against hemorrhagic fever viruses including Ebola.
